OXOLINIC ACID
(OXA)
Characteristics:
Oxolinic acid is a true 4-quinolone,
belonging to a group of chemically related synthetic antibacterial agents all
being carboxylic acids. The sodium salt is soluble in water and suitable for
use in aquaculture. The quinolones are bactericidal. They inhibit the bacterial
enzyme DNA-gyrase resulting in breaks in the bacterial DNA coiling.
OXA is efficacious against Gram
negative bacterial pathogens of fish. Administered orally, blended with the
fish feed, it shows a high bioavailability and is widely used for the treatment
of most fish systemic bacterial infections.
Composition
of OXA compounds:
Water soluble fish feed premixes,
either 24%, or 50% in powdered form, which contain 240g or 500g of oxolinic
sodium salt per 1000g of premix powder respectively.
Indications:
Wide spectrum antibacterial against
Gram negative fish pathogenic bacteria. It is potent for the treatment of fish
bacterial systemic infections in aquaculture caused by Aeromonas spp.,
Vibrio spp., Photobacterium spp., Yersinia spp., Pseudomonas spp. and many
others.
Always investigate the sensitivity/resistance of
bacteria (antibiogramme) prior to administration.
Precautions:
OXA premixes should not be
administered together with compounds containing oxytetracycline, other
tetracyclines, nitrofurans, or sulfonamides. OXA should not be administered to
fish for more than 10 consecutive days without a few days break.
Administration
and dosage:
OXA premixes are orally administered
via compounding with the fish feed. They may be mixed with fish oil, which is
then top-dressed onto pre-pelleted diets. Alternatively, the premixes may be
diluted in some water, which is then sprayed on the feed. After the feed dries
in air, some fish oil may be used for top coating.
·
Recommended therapeutic dose of active OXA for
marine farmed fish (Mediterranean):
60mg/kg of biomass/day (or 6g/100kg of biomas/day) continuously
for 7-10 days
·
Respective dose for 24% powdered premix: 25g/100kg biomass/day (or 250g/1000kg
biomass/day) continuously for 7-10 days
·
Respective dose for 50% powdered premix: 12g/100kg biomass/day (or 120g/1000kg
biomass/day) continuously for 7-10 days
·
Recommended daily dosages of OXA
premixes 24% and 50% compounded in 25 kg of fish feed (1 sack),
according to the feeding rate (expressed as percentage of fish biomass):
