The city of Grado
Location and history

Friuli region: The island and beach town of Grado and its lagoon are an original landscape within the Region Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and the province of Gorizia. It sits in the northeast corner of Italy, surrounded by Slovenia, Austria, Venezia and the Adriatic sea. It's a convergence of cultures defined by its traditions, its people and its cuisine. The name of Grado, “the sunny city”, “the golden island” is derived from the latin word “gradus” meaning ‘seaport’.

The history: The roots of Grado go back 1,500 years, evident by the old city's Roman-era ruins, churches and narrow, cobbled streets. Its history is closely linked with that of the larger town of Aquileia, a few kilometres to the north, from the time of the first barbarian invasions as well as with the history of the Republic of Venice. At the fall of the Republic of Venice, Aquileia became part of the princedom of Gorizia-Gradisca under the Habsburgs until the fall of the Austrian Empire.

Today: Grado is a luxurious beach resort providing romantic night life in the ancient center, lined by cafes, wine bars and restaurants. With over 12 thousands hectares of land and 25 kilometres coastline the lagoon of Grado is known for the quality of its surrounding sea (the average water temperature in September is 21°C). Grado is welknown for its thermal baths, the gastronomy and the very special wines “del Collio”. Its geographical location provides a mild microclimate throughout most of the year.
